At a sold out show in Malibu, CA, Christine Anderson had her crowd in an uproar. The little blond pixie of girl was rumbling over the piano keys, singing sweetly and desperately but with unfettered confidence that she was "losing her mind." Then, attacking the keyboard like a concert master, she flew into a piano solo that caused the cheering crowd to fall completely silent. For ten good seconds, you could have heard a pin drop, but the audience members quickly regained their composure and began to shout, "You're incredible!" If Christine Anderson's live show is any indication, the music world is in for a treat as this star begins to rise. And it's not just that the former child prodigy can play anybody under the table. This girl has a voice, and her charisma while performing could stop a train in its tracks. From the way her crazy curls flew about in every direction, to the way she engaged the audience between songs with humorous anecdontes and laughable confessions, Christine shined every second she was on stage. Although star quality is intangible, you know it when you see it. Christine Anderson has it. That, coupled with nothing more than a stack of original songs, is what got Christine from her beat up, old living room piano onto MTV and MuchMusic, and into the studio to record with some of the top dogs in the industry, too many Grammy nominations among them to count. What she's turned out is Pianist Envy, a five song EP of all original material that blends her rich, sultry voice with a beautiful, intoxicating piano score. With catchy hooks and tasty choruses, I have no doubt that Christine is going to be a tremendous hit on the pop charts. But in her lyrics I also see a soul of great depth that defies her youth, and promises a lasting artist with a mark to make on the world. Perhaps my favorite song is "Shakedown", due to her tremendous live rendition and the fact that its big piano solo could silence a crowd. But there is more than one hit on this record. The piano hook and chorus of "Times Of Your Life" are both brilliantly indellible and mesmerizingly beautiful. "Something Wicked" is haunting and waltz-like with lyrics no one else could have ever dreamed up. In "Superman", Christine's lyrical artistry gleams, and "Only You" stands out as sweet, fresh, and uncannily beautiful in its simplicity. There will certainly be comparisons made to other female pianist-singer/songwriters since people tend to lump all piano girls into one category. But Christine Anderson truly has a sound and a style all her own. Reminiscent of Lennon-McCartney, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and old Elton John, this is a big star on the rise. She just happens to be a girl with a piano.
